Toyota Motor Corp. has said that it will issue a vehicle defect recall for about 4 million of its sedans and trucks to fix a problem with gas pedals associated with runaway acceleration in Toyota and Lexus vehicles. According to a news report in the Chicago Tribune, the announcement by Toyota expands the scope and expense of this auto product recall. Initially, Toyota officials had claimed that there was nothing wrong with the design of their accelerator pedals and recalled floor mats, which they said caused the accelerator to get jammed. But now, officials have announced that Toyota will reconfigure or replace the gas pedals to prevent sudden acceleration. The Toyota recalls, the largest in the company's history, were forced as a result of a fatal accident in San Diego, which claimed the life of a California Highway Patrol officer and three members of his family. The San Diego Sheriff's Department, which conducted the accident investigation, determined that the accelerator jammed, causing the fiery crash. This auto product recall involves various models of the Toyota Camry, Prius, Avalon, Tacoma and Tundra, as well as the Lexus ES 350, IS 250 and IS 350. For three of the models – the Lexus ES 350, Camry and Avalon models – the floor surface will also be reconfigured to allow more room between the accelerator pedal and the floor. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) so far, has investigated allegations of unwanted acceleration in Toyota vehicles eight times since 2003. Two probes, involving carpet panels in 2004 Toyota Sienna minivans and floor mats in 2007 Lexus ES 350 and 2007 Toyota Camry sedans, led to smaller recalls. The federal agency also conducted six other investigations with no findings of a defect.
