Older homeowners who are considering a reverse mortgage can now get more help in the decision-making process.  The Federal Housing Administration, which insures reverse mortgages, last month instituted new standards for the counselors who, according to federal law, must meet with prospective borrowers before a loan can be approved. Recent good news about the housing market has many home buyers wondering whether now is a good time to buy.  For example, home sales activity increased 9.4 percent nationally in September, a 26 percent increase from a low point in January, according to the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS®.

Best web sites for new car actual invoice prices?

I'm in the market for a new car, but don't want to get played. I just want to spend no more than $500 over invoice. Besides edmunds.com, can anyone recommend some good sites for researching car prices (actual invoice that the dealer pays, not msrp)? Thanks!

Yahoo! Autos

Keep in mind...What a dealer pays is invoice plus destination charge. Then they get incentives and holdback from the manufacturer that reduce their real cost to less than invoice.

As for the internet not having the exact invoice price...not true. It's actually accurate. When I was shopping for a car recently, I wrote down the invoice prices from Yahoo! Autos before I went but I didn't show it to the dealers. Then during negotiations the dealers showed me invoice and it was the exact same amount. The dealers are generally open about this amount...probably because they know it's openly available on the internet.

Europe exceeds US in bank bonus crackdown

NEW YORK (AP) — The leaders of Britain and France are embracing a one-time tax on fat bonuses paid by bailed-out banks — a restriction that goes far beyond what's being considered in the United States.

Still, anger over lavish Wall Street pay is forcing some U.S. banks to take pre-emptive action. Goldman Sachs, the elite investment bank that repaid its $10 billion in bailout funds earlier this year, said Thursday it won't give cash bonuses to 30 top executives. Instead, they'll be paid in stock that can't be cashed in for five years.

Given Goldman's influence on Wall Street, its action will put pressure on other top U.S. banks to adopt similar measures. But it's unlikely to dampen what's shaping up as a blowout bonus season thanks to swift recovery by big banks in the U.S. and Europe.
