I Bet Will Shortz Never Loses His Cool With His Kids
A study published last week offers some really interesting insights into that frustration/yelling/losing it phase of parenting.
Researchers looked at parents of same sex twins, watching them interact with each kid in a few frustrating tasks. Then they gave the moms a series of tests of cognitive skill. They found that frustration intolerance in the moms was closely related to poor “working memory” skills.
Working memory is the ability to hold multiple packets of information in one’s brain at once. Cognitive theory says it’s important in loads of life skills. Including, apparently, the ability not to lose it when your kids are driving you insane.
I feel I have been vindicated. I betcha some of my readers feel good right now, too.
WHY?
For many, many years when my kids were small, I felt just a little guilty. You see, I just could NOT sit on the floor and play those inane games that little ones do. You know, match the animals with the sounds. Put together five piece puzzles. Stick round blocks in square holes.
NOPE. My brain just could not handle the inanity. I just could NOT be not thinking for that long. I sat on the floor, alright. With a crossword in my lap and a pen stuck above my ear. I kept crossword books in the car, for when I was stuck at a kids’ soccer game (I mean, the KIDS were counting the dandelions instead of participating, so why should I pay attention?). I worked puzzles at birthday parties and stupid parent orientation meetings (the ones I couldn’t get out of, anyway) where “normal” parents asked the same inane questions over and over again.
[NO, kids aren't the only people who play inane games. Adults just call them "socializing." Will Shortz, to the rescue. No one bothered me when I was working a Sunday puzzle IN INK. Besides, my superior working memory skills allow me to work puzzles AND keep track of what's going on.]

anyone know the definitions to these car parts?
i have to do a crossword puzzle with the car parts as the words.
im having trouble looking up definitions for these words:
alternator warning light
automatic choke
friction point
head restraints
hood release
shift indicator
ignition switch
thanks to anyone who can help!
alternator warning light: I'm not familiar with the specific light as I would guess its on mainly utility vehicals with high power loads. It would be a light that would come on if the alternator was nearing capacity for creating power.
Automatic Choke: automaticaly richens the air/fuel mixture to allow the starting of an engine when cold.
Friction point: I would guess the point where the clutch first starts grabbing. I'v always herd this refered to a 'clutch point'
Hood release: lever that releases the hood
shift indicator: a feature on some tachometers that indicates that ideal shift point.
ignition switch: what turns on the car. ie. key and starter...

Love in the Middle Ages – Chapter 7
“Happy birthday, Lisa!”
My dentist’s receptionist, a woman with an unreasonably cheerful disposition and a voice that resonated like a drill, called every patient on their birthday. It must have been in the “How to build your practice” manual.
“It’s not til tomorrow,” I protested feebly.
Shelly said she knew that, but she wouldn’t be working on the weekend. “And I didn’t want to miss the big five-oh!” she shrilled.
It wasn’t the most auspicious way to start the day. But things quickly got better. I drove Martin back to his house. I think we both knew it was time. Then I took the rest of the day off to celebrate.
Okay, to be honest, I took the day off because I had plans to meet David. He was in town for a sales convention—David, the nerdiest boy in high school, turned out to be a super salesman—and we’d agreed to get together for lunch at the Top of the Mark. It’s just lunch, I thought; we’ll have a drink or two and see what happens. I’d never had a fling with someone else’s husband. But he used to be my husband, too.
