Cars
Dad’s first car was a 1962 Chevrolet Super Sport Impala convertible. He bought it when he was 16 years old. The color was called Honduras Maroon which was a metallic red. He loved that car…still does. He rebuilt the engine, and continued to rebuild many engines over the years. This is the car he had when he came to the A&W where I worked in high school. But more about that later… Our first new car that we bought together was a 1974 Hornet. At the time, I was working at Stewarts Hair Salon at Cumberland Square and, of course, parked way out in the parking spaces closest to Spruce Hills Drive so no one would bump their car doors into it. At first no one parked out there. But someone (we found out later that this was a pharmacist who worked at Osco) decided to be cute and started parking his car about an inch from my car on the driver’s side. He did this every day until one day Dad and Wayne parked our ’65 Ford and Wayne’s old station wagon on each side of his car about an inch away on both sides. Dad left a note on his window asking him to call if he had a problem with the way I was parking my car. They left the cars parked there on each side of his car for several days and the guy never did call. Then one day his car was gone. He had to have it towed…that was the only way he could have gotten it out. After that I resumed my parking place out by the road and it never happened again… He also bought a 1966 junker VW Bug to drive around in the winter. This was the car we were in the day that Dad thought it would be fun to drive under a 6-inch down spout at the old Eagles grocery store on 18th Street right after a good summer rain. The rain from the roof was gushing out of the down spout and none of us knew what he was going to do. So we had the windows open and he drove right into the big stream of water coming from the down spout and just stopped. The water just poured into the car all over all of us! When he was done with this car, he just cut it up and junked it. He also cut his hand pretty bad.

Fiero fanatics make a dream come true for teen battling cancer
By Barbie PorterAs the fog lifted Sunday morning in Frazee, there was a reason to miss church. It had nothing to do with the Vikings, but rather a devoted fan of the Green Bay Packers whose dream was about to come true.
After being diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer in early October, an 18-year-old Frazee boy, Tyler Shipman, posted a wish on an Internet chat forum geared to Fiero fanatics.
He told them he'd been slowly rebuilding a 1986 Pontiac Fiero, the second he'd owned.
"I sit at the hospital with cancer and they can't treat it," Tyler wrote. "(They don't know) how long I'll be here; they say could be till spring or longer, or shorter ... I'm just trying to find some way to get it restored before I pass."
At 9:30 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 22 his wish came true. After traveling to Frazee and working through the night at Frazee Auto Body, which donated the shop and tools, 20-plus members from Pennock's Fiero Forum (www.fiero.nl/cgi- bin/main.cgi)
