Choosing the correct drivetrain for your Rat
If I want to show, I need to be able to go!
In choosing the correct drivetrain for your Rat Rod , you need to consider three things: comfort, drivability,reliability.
Where can I go with what I have? Will I be able to get there? Can I go at any time? These all need to be taken into consideration in correctly planning your build.
Step One : EngineNothing gives that Rat Rod Of yours recognition like a good mix and match of engine and trans. The ultimate is an older Hemi, blown or not. Any chevy big block is cool as well.
Trying to keep it nostaglic by using a Buick Nailhead motor or a “fine 409″Â from an Impala is the way to be unique. This is not saying that there is nothing wrong the good old Chevy 350, Ford 351, or Chrysler 360. Who is to say that you couldn’t use a straight 6, or a Cummins diesel (I’ve seen it done!). It’s up to you. Be creative!
Step Two: TransmissionManual or Automatic: that has been the argument for generations and generations to come. But whats cooler? Nothing beats banging gears with a four or a five speed.
Automatics are easier to drive, and can be made to be indestructible. If you can find a Turbo 400 Chevy, you cant kill them. But then again, 700R4 overdrive trans is nice to cruise the highways with an extra gear to keep the RPM’s down. The choice is strictly preference.
Step Three : Rear EndMost rear axles are solid. Leaf spring rears are common like GM 10 or 12 bolt, and readily available. Independent rears are a bit more modern and sometimes out of place in a Rat Rod . Ford 9″ rears area also very strong and a favorite among rodders. Quick change rears are very good looking, aesthetically, especially when the rear end of the car is very short or almost non-existant.
Tie these three together with a strong driveshaft and away you go. Keeping the motors rusty and ugly is a trademark look of a Rat Rod, but I have seen them with pretty engines and ugly bodies and I must say it is a different and interesting combination. Going with a rusty body and a radical color for your drivetrain combination is a good idea if you want to have some subtle double takes.
