OBD ii Scan Tool – Finding the Best Auto Engine Code Reader

Obd II is a set of standards and practices developed by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) which an auto code reader (OBD II Scan Tool) uses to communicate with a car’s on board diagnostic computer . These standards were first introduced in the mid 90’s to help unify the trend of manufactures using different systems and singles to help monitor and control the fuel feed systems and ignition systems that were required to keep cars compliant with the Clean Air Act of 1970.

The 1970 Clean Air Act established the Environmental Protection Ageny (EPA) which is charged with the reduction of “mobile emissions” from cars and trucks with in the United States of America. The EPA has the authority to set emission standards for cars and trucks these standards are always evolving toward cleaner and more rigorous emission standards. Because these standards must be met over the life of the vehicle and not just at production a universal way to monitor and inspect was needed, leading the creation of the OBD II set of standards.

There are three basic OBD-II connection protocols that are in use. These vary in the way in which the car’s on-board diagnostic computer communicates with the scanner console or auto code reader. As early as 1994 manufactures started to implement the OBD II standards in there monitoring systems however all cars built from January 1, 1996 had to comply with OBD II standards. The three basic protocols (hardware communications) are:

ISO 9141 circuitry use by Chrysler and most European and Asian imports. SAE J1850 VPW (Variable Pulse Width Modulation) used in General Motors (GM) cars and light trucks. SAE J1850 PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) used by Ford Motors

Those these are the three common OBD-II electrical connection protocols all share the same command set which is set out by the SEA J1979 standard. Prior to OBD-II the connection point could be located anywhere either inside passenger or engine compartment. With all OBD-II complaint cars the connection has to be located within the passenger compartment and easily accessible from the driver’s seat.
