2011 Subaru WRX and WRX STI get the wing
It’s been building street-ready rally cars dubbed STI, fueling the dreams of every weekend warrior. When the Impreza was redesigned a few years ago, Subaru went from making the STI a sedan-only model to a hatchback-only model. Now, for the first time in the U.S., Subaru will offer a sedan and a hatchback model of the STI.
The 2011 STIs will be based on a special edition from 2010. Subaru takes the 2010 and makes it lighter, stiffer and adds more grip while leaving most of the power plant and transmission bits alone. Aluminum parts have been added to the suspension to lower weight, and even the 18-inch wheels are 17.6 pounds lighter than the 2010’s.
Subaru is now offering the 2011 Impreza WRX STI in two different body styles. In addition to the existing hatchback, the 2010 New York Auto Show played host to the revival of the Subaru Impreza WRX STI sedan, complete with a massive rear wing.
All 2011 STI models receive an improved suspension consisting of stiffer bushings, stiffer springs, and thicker anti-roll bars, while having less weight than the 2010 model due to lighter 18-inch wheels that shave 8 kg off the total weight.
Power from the 2.5-litre 4-cylinder turbo engine remains unchanged, at 305 hp and 393 Nm of torque in U.S. trim, with a 6-speed manual and all-wheel-drive. Apparently, the sedan is more stable at high speeds due to the 14-inch tall spoiler. The wide-bodied sedan also features two mufflers as opposed to the hatchback’s single giant muffler.

For 2011 Subaru has endowed its Impreza WRX with a refresh. Substantial cosmetic upgrades and an increased track-width mark the largest changes to hit the sporty platform. Subaru pre-released a single photo of the mid-life refresh.
The turbocharged and intercooled 2.5L Subaru Boxer 4 cylinder stays with the car through the evolution, putting out an unchanged, though still exciting, 265 horsepower. The Boxer powerplant teams up with a 5-speed manual gearbox.
